House Representative Maxine Waters (D-CA) declared on Friday of last week that she "will never forgive black voters" who vote for the re-election of President Trump. In an interview on SiriusXM with radio show host Joe Madison, she explained that the country will go "backwards", calling him a racist:
“He has no respect for us. He’s not doing anything for us. And for those black young men who think somehow they can align themselves with Trump, not only are they terribly mistaken. Any of them showing their face, I will never ever forgive them for undermining the possibility to help their own people and their own communities. It is absolutely unconscionable. It is shameful.”
She went on to describe President Trump as a "deplorable human being [who] has caused, the confrontation, the dog-whistling to the right-wing, the white supremacists, the KKK, and they’re coming alive...I don’t know why they would be doing it. I don’t know what’s on their minds, but if we don’t turn out this vote, and turn it out huge, this man could end up winning again. And this country would go backwards..”
Ms. Waters is not the only prominent figure to express dismay with the black vote for Trump. In an interview on the "Breakfast Club" with Charlamagne tha God on May 22nd former VP Joe Biden stated, "if you have a problem figuring out whether you are for me or for Trump, then you ain't black." Charlamagne rebuffed the comment saying that this "don't have nothin' to do with Trump, it has to do with the fact that I want something for my community."
Chelsea Handler also weighed in on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon as she recounted a conversation on October 23rd with former boyfriend, rapper/producer 50 Cent who had previously said he didn't want to be "20 Cent" due to the proposed Biden tax policies. She said that she “had to remind him that he was a black person, so he can’t vote for Donald Trump and that he shouldn’t be influencing an entire swath of people who may listen to him because he’s worried about his own personal pocketbook." Chelsea also later apologized on the Breakfast Club for being "inappropriate" saying as a "white woman" she doesn't "have any business saying anything like that." 50 Cent later said he was joking about his vote for Trump.
If the past few weeks are any indication of Black voter enthusiasm for President Trump, then the November 2020 election could bring record numbers for him. Just today, Rasmussen Reports Morning Reader Data Points are projecting Black likely voter percentage in the double digits.
Black voter support for Trump seems to be much more enthusiastic than it was in 2016. Pew research found that only 8% of blacks voted for President Trump in the 2016 election versus Clinton, who won 88% of their vote. Former President Barack Obama captured 91% of their vote.
Candace Owens who is the Founder of Blexit, an organization aiming to "uplift and empower minorities to realize the American Dream" has been adamant in her belief that the "mood" in the black community is shifting.
Many black personalities have emerged in support of President Trump, including comedian Terrence Williams, rapper Kanye West, Diamond and Silk, rappers Ice Cube and Lil Wayne, among others. Ice Cube was recently grilled by Jake Tapper of CNN for his cooperation with President Trump on his Contract with Black America. And Lil Wayne recently met with President Trump to discuss criminal reform and the Platinum Plan, both aimed at helping the black community in material ways.
Republican Joe Collins, a black Navy veteran is currently running to unseat Maxine Waters in California's 43rd District. A recent viral television ad showed Collins standing outside of Maxine Water's "6 million dollar mansion", a home he says is not even in her district, adding- "she does not drink our water, she does not breathe our air and while she sits here, in her mansion, our district is in ruins." As he continues to walk through his district, he explains that he "was one of the kids left behind by Maxine Waters. I'm going to fight for safety and dignity for South L.A."
During a recent interview with Laura Ingraham of Fox News, Collins tells Laura that Rep. Waters "has the power to create or remove legislation and affect positive change and brings value to our lives and she has failed to do that for the amount of time that she spent in Congress as well as the [California] State Senate and the State assembly...If we do not remove her from office, if we don't start electing new people to office, we are going to continue to see a down-slide in our communities, economic decline in our communities, and violence is going to get worse." Maxine Waters, 82 years old, has served the 43rd District since 1991.
