#1Trump Administration Is Reviewing All 55 Million Foreigners With US Visas for Any Violations - Matthew Lee for AP News, Secretary Marco Rubio (community note), Nick Sortor, Huey (community note), Charlie Kirk (community note), Joshua Steinman (community note), and ColonalTowner-Watkins/hernando arce on X

The Trump administration said Thursday it is reviewing more than 55 million people who have valid U.S. visas for any violations that could lead to deportation, part of a growing crackdown on foreigners who are permitted to be in the United States. In a written answer to a question from The Associated Press, the State Department said all U.S. visa holders, which can include tourists from many countries, are subject to “continuous vetting,” with an eye toward any indication they could be ineligible for permission to enter or stay in the United States. Should such information be found, the visa will be revoked, and if the visa holder is in the United States, he or she would be subject to deportation...

#2 The Secret Funding of the WHO Foundation - Tracy Beanz and Michelle Edwards for The HighWire,
Have you ever heard of the WHO Foundation (WHOF)? With little fanfare, the WHOF was created in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic to enlarge the World Health Organization’s (WHO) funding base by attracting philanthropic donations from the commercial sector. The independent body pursues funds from across industry, civil society, and governments and then turns around and awards grants to the WHO, yet there is little to no transparency. In fact, a recent analysis found that, to date, little is known regarding the nature of donations to the WHOF. The foundation’s shroud of secrecy leaves it—and, in turn, the World Health Organization itself—exposed to risks of perceived reputational damage or undue influence. In other words, it leads one to suspect that the group’s decisions are swayed by corporate or big money influence...

#4 Walmart Recalls Its Frozen Shrimp in 13 States, Citing Potential Radioactive Contamination - PBS News, iwaspoisoned.com, Fifty Shades of Whey, ABC News, The Rockstar Cats, Mayra/Jesus Chrysler, and Michael Druggan/Meriwether Farms on X

Walmart has recalled frozen, raw shrimp sold in 13 states because federal health officials say it could have potential radioactive contamination. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration asked Walmart to pull three lots of Great Value brand frozen shrimp from stores after federal officials detected Cesium-137, a radioactive isotope, in shipping containers and a sample of breaded shrimp imported from Indonesia. The products could pose a “potential health concern” for people exposed to low levels of Cesium-137 over time, FDA officials said. “If you have recently purchased raw frozen shrimp from Walmart that matches this description, throw it away,” FDA officials said in a statement...

The California legislature approved on Thursday a redistricting plan aimed at giving Democrats five more seats in the U.S. Congress, countering a partisan advantage President Donald Trump sought from a Republican move to redraw political maps in Texas. California Democrats pushed their three bills through the state Senate and Assembly in a remarkable flurry of fast-track action, ahead of a Friday deadline to get the changes on the ballot in time for a special election on November 4...

#6 Federal Judge Orders Closure of Trump’s ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ Immigration Jail - Richard Luscombe for The Guardian, Today in us and world, BellaLovesUSA, Epoch Trace, Florida Issues, and Hey, Dave! on X

A federal judge in Miami late on Thursday ordered the closure of the Trump administration’s notorious “Alligator Alcatraz” immigration jail within 60 days, and ruled that no more detainees were to be brought to the facility while it was being wound down. The shock ruling by district court judge Kathleen Williams builds on a temporary restraining order she issued two weeks ago halting further construction work at the remote tented camp, which has attracted waves of criticism for harsh conditions, abuse of detainees, and denial of due process as they await deportation...

Russia’s top diplomat said Friday that no meeting is planned between President Vladimir Putin and Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy, casting new doubt on President Donald Trump’s push for a summit to end the war. “Putin is ready to meet with Zelenskyy when the agenda is ready for a summit, and this agenda is not ready at all,” Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told NBC News’ “Meet the Press” moderator Kristen Welker in an exclusive interview. The White House has been working to secure a summit location and date following Trump’s meeting with Putin in Alaska and subsequent talks with Zelenskyy and European leaders in Washington. But Russia has signaled that it is in no rush for a Putin-Zelenskyy one-on-one, and on Thursday launched one of its biggest aerial attacks of the war hitting targets across Ukraine including an American electronics business...

The Trump administration can slash hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of research funding in its push to cut federal diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, the Supreme Court decided Thursday. The split court lifted a judge’s order blocking $783 million worth of cuts made by the National Institutes of Health to align with Republican President Donald Trump’s priorities. The court split 5-4 on the decision. Chief Justice John Roberts was among those who wouldn't have allowed the cuts, along with the court’s three liberals. The high court did keep the Trump administration's anti-DEI directive blocked for future funding with a key vote from Justice Amy Coney Barrett, however.

A federal judge ruled Thursday that President Trump's former personal lawyer Alina Habba is serving illegally as the U.S. attorney for New Jersey. The judge's decision came after three men facing criminal charges in the state challenged her appointment, arguing that Habba's appointment last month as acting U.S. Attorney in the District of New Jersey violated the Federal Vacancies Reform Act.  U.S. District Judge Matthew Brann of Pennsylvania wrote that Habba has been serving "without lawful authority" since the beginning of July and "must be disqualified from participating in any ongoing cases."
