A wave of Republican incumbents were swept out of the Texas House in Tuesday's primary runoffs, including a handful who opposed school vouchers last fall, handing Gov. Greg Abbott a tentative majority in the lower chamber on his signature issue. With most ballots counted across the state, six of the eight GOP House members who were forced into overtime appeared to lose their runoffs, continuing a surge of anti-establishment energy that had already led to the ouster of nine House Republicans in the March primary. The runoffs brought mixed results for Texas' hard right: the House gained a pro-voucher majority — for now — and the 15 GOP incumbents ousted by insurgent challengers across both rounds of the primary amounted to a record. But House Speaker Dade Phelan, the top target of the party's rightmost faction, survived his runoff, setting the stage for a period of major turbulence and uncertainty for the lower chamber as it shifts even further right... Manhattan jury began deliberations Wednesday in former President Trump's New York criminal trial. A guilty verdict in the historic case could have far-reaching consequences for the 2024 presidential election and upend criminal case law in New York, while a not guilty verdict would give Trump ammunition in a potential lawsuit for malicious prosecution, legal experts told Fox News Digital. "It seems this is an all-or-nothing case, assuming arguendo there is a verdict and not a hung jury," said Trey Gowdy, "Sunday Night in America" host and a former federal prosecutor. Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) announced that the construction of a new military base in Eagle Pass is almost complete. Abbott announced the plans to build the forward operating base in February. It will only house Texas National Guard soldiers, who have been guarding the border hot spot since last year. Abbott announced the progress on the construction of the base in a post on X, alongside aerial footage... The House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic will send a letter Wednesday to Dr. Anthony Fauci requesting access to his email and cell phone for any information that relates to COVID-19 origins, EcoHealth alliance, and their investigation. The Daily Caller first obtained a copy of the letter, which was sent by Republican Ohio Rep. Brad Wenstrup, the chairman of the select subcommittee. In it, he mentions the testimony of Fauci’s senior advisor at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Dr. David Morens, and how the doctor recently testified before the subcommittee after they uncovered evidence that suggests he intentionally obstructed their investigations into the origins of COVID-19 to protect Fauci... Nineteen state attorneys general filed a lawsuit with the Supreme Court last week against a coalition of five Democrat-led states accused of coercing the nation into compliance with a radical climate agenda. The group of nearly two dozen attorneys general filed the suit against California, Connecticut, Minnesota, New Jersey, and Rhode Island for imposing strict regulations that present consequences for the rest of the nation... Home buyers will be able to buy a home without putting any money down under a new program launched by United Wholesale Mortgage, one of the largest U.S. mortgage lenders. The Pontiac, Mich.-based company’s new program will be available to first-time home buyers and people earning at or below 80% of an area’s median income, the company said in a press release. UWM (UWMC) will give eligible buyers a second-lien loan of up to $15,000 in the form of down-payment assistance for 3% of the home’s purchase price. The loan will not accrue interest or require a monthly payment. “Homeownership is something we’re very passionate about,” Melinda Wilner, chief operating officer at UWM, told MarketWatch. The company had previously allowed buyers to put down as little as 1% on their homes, but it wanted to go further to help home buyers, she said. The lender is anticipating a higher volume of borrowers with its new zero-down program, Wilner added... President Joe Biden on Wednesday laid forcefully into rival and former President Donald Trump as he and Vice President Kamala Harris courted Black voters at a rally in Philadelphia -- delivering a speech during which he ticked off what he views as accomplishments and tying them to Black voters. "Because Black Americans voted, Kamala and I are president and vice president of the United States. Because of you. That's not hyperbole," Biden told a crowd gathered at Girard College, a majority Black boarding school for first grade through 12th grade. "Because you voted, Donald Trump is defeated former president. And with your vote -- with your vote in 2024, we're gonna make Donald Trump a loser again."
