Nebraska’s unicameral legislature, where Republicans hold a majority, on April 3 rejected a proposal to change how the state allocates its electoral votes in presidential elections, a move that would help former President Donald Trump if enacted... A judge in Washington state ruled Monday that the state’s ban on high-capacity ammunition magazines is unconstitutional — but the law will remain in effect while the state appeals the decision. Cowlitz County Superior Court Judge Gary Bashor ruled that Washington’s ban on magazines that hold more than 10 rounds violates both the Washington state and U.S. constitutions. He issued an immediate injunction to stop the state from enforcing the ban, which has been in place since 2022... Pope Francis today issued a landmark statement called “Infinite Dignity” that condemns concerning practices such as surrogacy and euthanasia. The new 20-page declaration Dignitas Infinita, or “Infinite Dignity,” has the Catholic Church proclaiming that “gender theory” plays into “the age-old temptation to make oneself God” as well as that “sex change” surgery is a threat to human dignity. “In the light of Revelation, the Church resolutely reiterates and confirms the ontological dignity of the human person, created in the image and likeness of God and redeemed in Jesus Christ,” the document declares at its beginning... Sen. Lindsey Graham sparred with Donald Trump on Monday after the former president attacked Graham, R-S.C., for pushing his bill to outlaw abortion across the U.S. after 15 weeks of pregnancy. While Trump said the issue should be left to states, Graham vowed to keep pressing for federal limits. “I think we should draw a line,” Graham told reporters. “We know that the Dobbs decision did not say that there’s no federal role. There are three laws on the books at the federal level. So the idea that Dobbs prevents the federal government from acting, I think, is an error. The idea of the Republican Party abandoning the opposition to late-term abortion, I think, would be a mistake because most Americans oppose late-term abortion.” Republican Georgia congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene escalated her threat to oust Mike Johnson, issuing a searing indictment of the House speaker in a letter explaining her decision to file a motion to oust him. In the five-page memo sent to her Republican colleagues on Tuesday morning, Greene laid out a detailed case against the speaker, accusing Johnson of failing to deliver on promises he ran on and breaking legislative procedural rules. Johnson is “throwing our own razor-thin majority into chaos by not serving his own GOP conference that elected him,” Greene wrote. While Yellen stuck with zero-interest policies until Trump was elected, then raised The Fed Funds Target Rate 8 times. Yellen only raised the target rate once under Obama. Clearly playing political favoritism... During the COVID-19 pandemic, excess deaths, including cancer, have become a concern in Japan, which has a rapidly aging population. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate how age-adjusted mortality rates (AMRs) for different types of cancer in Japan changed during the COVID-19 pandemic (2020-2022). Official statistics from Japan were used to compare observed annual and monthly AMRs with predicted rates based on pre-pandemic (2010-2019) figures using logistic regression analysis. No significant excess mortality was observed during the first year of the pandemic (2020). However, some excess cancer mortalities were observed in 2021 after mass vaccination with the first and second vaccine doses, and significant excess mortalities were observed for all cancers and some specific types of cancer...

Penalties for those who expose law enforcement officers to fentanyl are set to increase in the Sunshine State after new legislation was signed Monday. Gov. Ron DeSantis signed Senate bills 718 and 66; the first creates a second-degree felony for any adult individual who recklessly exposes first responders to fentanyl that results in an overdose or serious bodily harm. SB 718 also expands protections for individuals against prosecution if they seek help for themselves or someone else if they believe an overdose is happening. SB 66 designates June 6th as Revive Awareness Day while directing the Florida Department of Health to raise awareness of the dangers of exposure to opioids...
