Just a few days ago, European leaders were scrambling to respond to US President Donald Trump’s increasingly aggressive rhetoric about taking control of Greenland, and bracing for an avalanche of insults as he arrived to speak on their home turf. As expected, Trump slammed European officials on a variety of issues as he spoke at Davos in the Swiss Alps. But he also ruled out using force to annex the Danish territory he covets, lowering the temperature on an issue that threatened the future of the NATO military alliance. He then went one step further in a meeting with NATO chief Mark Rutte – announcing afterward that they’d reached an agreement on a possible deal on Greenland, and that he would no longer impose tariffs on European nations opposed to his ambitions to acquire the Arctic island...
#3 What Is Trump’s ‘Board of Peace’ and Who Is Joining? Here’s What to Know - Helen Regan for CNN, The White House, Orbán Viktor, Rapid Response 47, Erid Daugherty, Vjosa Osmani, and New York Post on X
US President Donald Trump is struggling to attract Western allies to his “Board of Peace,” but has, so far, garnered the support of Middle Eastern monarchs, the man known as Europe’s last dictator, and at least one leader wanted for alleged war crimes. Trump has invited dozens of countries to join the board that seeks to resolve global conflicts, but its remit has alarmed several US allies, as has the US leader’s comment that it “might” replace the United Nations. The board, indefinitely chaired by Trump, was originally conceived as a limited body tasked to oversee the reconstruction of Gaza, which was decimated by Israel’s two-year war. But its purpose has since expanded to tackle conflicts the world over, and the charter draft, which was sent along with the invitations to join, does not even reference Gaza...
#4 Gov. Newsom Denied Entry in USA House Due to Pressure From White House - Noe Padilla for USA TODAY, Melissa Hallman, Vigilant Fox, C3 (community Note), The Tropical Cow, Eric Daugherty (community note),
California Gov. Gavin Newsom's office said the governor was denied entry into a venue at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on Jan. 21, after being invited to speak at the event due to "pressure" from the Trump administration. Newsom had been scheduled to speak with Fortune at the USA House, Davos, a privately organized event, at the World Economic Forum, which has been recognized by the U.S. government as the nation's headquarters in Davos. According to Politico, Newsom was scheduled to speak at an event on Jan. 22, one day after Trump's speech, but that has since been removed from the schedule. But in messages obtained by Politico, it claims that the USA House leadership was pressured by the United States Department of State...#5 Governor of Florida Criticizes EU Ambition to Issue a CBDC or Digital Euro - JD Alois for Crowdfund Insider, Ron DeSantis/Wide Awake Media, American Dude 2.0., KYC RIP, Bitcoin is Freedom, and Steven Carney on X
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, the most popular and successful governor in the US and a potential Presidential candidate, posted on X today, criticizing central banker François Villeroy de Galhau, who was speaking at the WEF in Davos about central bank digital currency (CBDC) and a digital Euro. The European Central Bank (ECB) says a digital Euro is its top project for 2026. The pilot phase is expected to start in 2027 with the launch of the digital Euro following in 2029. The ECB is considering certain limitations on the digital Euro, such as caps on individual holdings. As it will be issued by the bank, it will be easy for authorities to monitor usage and control holdings. A Nueces County jury on Wednesday acquitted former Uvalde CISD police officer Adrian Gonzales of all charges in the first criminal trial tied to the 2022 Robb Elementary School shooting that killed 19 children and two teachers. As the verdict was read, several family members of the victims sat in silence, visibly emotional, some covering their faces as they wiped away tears. “It’s been an emotional roller coaster since day one. We prepared for the worst,” said Javier Cazares, who lost his 9-year-old daughter, Jackie, in the shooting. “We had a little hope, but it wasn’t enough.” More than 200 million people across more than 35 states, from New Mexico to New York, are in the path of a potentially historic winter storm that's expected to extend over 2,000 miles and deliver crippling snow and ice, beginning Friday. A trailing blast of Arctic air associated with the polar vortex is expected to bring a dangerous re-freeze that could create long-duration power outages and paralyze travel for days. Texas, North Carolina, and South Carolina have all declared states of emergency ahead of the sprawling system as some energy companies have begun to mobilize additional crews, preparing for ice accretion capable of taking down power lines and creating nearly impossible driving conditions... Former special counsel Jack Smith will warn Americans not to take the rule of law for granted in his first public testimony before Congress about the investigations into President Donald Trump, according to his prepared statement obtained by NBC News. "I have seen how the rule of law can erode. My fear is that we have seen the rule of law function in this country for so long that many of us have come to take it for granted," Smith plans to tell members of the House Judiciary Committee. "But, the rule of law is not self-executing — it depends on our collective commitment to apply it. It requires dedicated service on behalf of others, especially when that service is difficult and comes with costs," he plans to say. "Our willingness to pay those costs is what tests and defines our commitment to the rule of law and to this wonderful country." Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Wednesday that Mexico sent 37 cartel members to the United States at the request of the Justice Department, but insisted it was a “sovereign decision” by Mexico. Sheinbaum responded to claims by analysts and opponents who said the transfers carried out the previous day were the result of mounting pressure from Washington as President Donald Trump has threatened to take military action on cartels. Speaking at her regular morning news briefing, Sheinbaum said that although the transfers were made at the request of the U.S. government, the decision was taken by the National Security Council after analyzing what was “convenient for Mexico” and in terms of its “national security.” A House committee advanced resolutions Wednesday to hold former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in contempt of Congress over the Jeffrey Epstein investigation, opening the prospect of the House using one of its most powerful punishments against a former president for the first time. In bipartisan votes, the Republican-controlled House Oversight Committee approved the contempt of Congress charges, setting up potential votes in the House. Democrats were split on the measures, with a number of progressive lawmakers calling for full transparency in the Epstein investigation even if it meant threatening a former Democrat president if he refuses to testify...
