President Trump on Monday called on Democrats to reopen the government, saying he will only discuss a potential deal on extending health care tax credits once they support the GOP funding proposal. In a statement on Truth Social, Trump appeared to shift from his earlier comments on Monday, when he signaled he was open to a deal with Democrats on health care, an issue at the core of the shutdown debate. “Democrats have SHUT DOWN the United States Government right in the midst of one of the most successful Economies, including a Record Stock Market, that our Country has ever had. This has sadly affected so many programs, services, and other elements of Society that Americans rely on — and it should not have happened,” Trump said in a Truth Social post Monday evening...

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has officially updated guidelines for COVID-19 and chickenpox vaccines based on recommendations made last month by the agency's vaccine advisory committee, whose members were hand-picked by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. earlier this year. In a news release Monday, the CDC said it updated its adult and child immunization schedules to apply "individual-based decision-making to COVID-19 vaccination." It also now recommends that toddlers receive protection from varicella, or chickenpox, as a standalone immunization, rather than in combination with measles, mumps, and rubella vaccination...

Prominent influencers within President Trump’s MAGA movement have called for former special counsel Jack Smith to be arrested after the Republican-led Senate Judiciary Committee published documents indicating the FBI targeted the cell phones of eight GOP Senator’s as part of its ‘Arctic Frost’ investigation. This formed the basis of Smith’s special counsel investigation into Trump, which in turn led to criminal charges. Smith’s team claimed Trump and key allies broke the law when attempting to overturn the 2020 presidential election result, though charges were dropped after Trump won the 2024 presidential election in November...

The state of Illinois and the city of Chicago sued President Donald Trump on Monday, seeking to block the deployment of federalized National Guard troops to Chicago, as hundreds of National Guard troops from Texas headed to the nation's third-largest city. Trump then escalated the widening clash with Democratic-led states and cities over the domestic use of military forces, threatening to invoke the Insurrection Act as a means to circumvent court restrictions on deploying troops where they are unwanted by local officials...

President Trump suggested Monday he may use the Insurrection Act if courts continue to bar him from deploying the National Guard to cities across the U.S. Trump would be the first president in more than 60 years to use the 1807 Act that allows the deployment of U.S. troops to quell domestic unrest without state approval. Trump came close to invoking the Act earlier this year, when he sent some 700 Marines to Los Angeles to respond to ICE protests against the will of California officials...

#7 The Supreme Court’s First Blockbuster Case This Term Looks Pretty Fake - Mary Harris and Mark Joseph Stern for Slate, Kristen Waggoner, Do No Harm, Andrea Piccotti-Bayer, Rick Berke, and Abiel on X
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court will hear arguments in Chiles v. Salazar, a case that seeks to undo a major triumph of the LGBTQ+ movement: bans on “conversion therapy” for gay and transgender minors. These laws, now on the books in more than half the states, prohibit licensed counselors from attempting to change a client’s sexual orientation or gender identity if they are under 18. Lawmakers enacted them in response to overwhelming evidence that conversion therapy is both ineffective and dangerous, especially for children and teenagers. Now, however, conservative lawyers are on the verge of undoing these legislative achievements by persuading the Supreme Court that restrictions on this discredited “therapy” violate the free speech rights of counselors...
