On Saturday, December 7, 2024, President Elect Donald J. Trump traveled to France for the reopening of the Notre Dame Cathedral. This was his first trip outside the United States since winning the presidential election.

While in France, President-Elect Trump met with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Elysee Presidential Palace in Paris, France. In November, French President Macron was the first foreign leader to congratulate Trump on defeating his political opponent, Kamala Harris. During their meeting, both presidents reportedly discussed the reciprocal relationship between the two countries. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy later joined Trump and Macron in discussing global issues and maintaining alliances.

While President Biden did not attend the event in France, his wife, Jill Biden, did in his place. However, it is important to note that the same day President Zelenskyy met with the two leaders, the Biden Administration announced a $988 million aid packet to Ukraine for the ongoing war with Russia. It is clear that the Biden Administration is committed to giving as much of our tax dollars to Ukraine before the Trump Administration takes office in January. Instead of funding the aid for the Americans affected by Hurricane Helene, our President would rather give it to a foreign nation. This is the 22nd aid packet that Biden has sent to Zelenskyy. During Trump’s campaign, his running mate, JD Vance, criticized the Biden administration for supporting Ukraine in 2022 after Russia’s invasion. Vance also suggested that the way for the war to come to an end would be for Ukraine to concede and use the land that Russia seized for a demilitarized zone. President Zelenskyy flatly rejected Vance’s proposal. During his campaign, Trump promised to end the war before Inauguration Day.

Donald Trump took to Truth Social on Sunday, December 8, 2024, to ask Zelenskyy to make a deal and ‘End the madness.

After the ceremony at Notre Dame Cathedral, Trump met with Prince William of the United Kingdom, who was attending the ceremony in place of his Father, King Charles III. During the forty-minute meeting, the two discussed global issues but mainly focused on the importance of the relationship between the United States of America and the United Kingdom.

Foreign leaders strive to form a good relationship with Trump as he heads into his second term. For example, on Friday, December 6, 2024, President-Elect Donald Trump met with Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at Mar-a-Lago. The two men discussed illegal immigration, the economy, and tariffs. Trudeau traveled to Mar-a-Lago after Trump threatened to put tariffs on Canadian products over concerns regarding illegal immigration.
