Updated Israeli exit polls early Wednesday showed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gaining ground against his political rivals but still falling short of a parliamentary majority, leaving the country facing a possible political deadlock despite a combined majority of seats projected for parties outside his governing bloc. An updated Channel 12 exit poll at 3:30 a.m. (Israel time) projected 53 seats for Netanyahu's right-wing and religious bloc, compared with 49 for the main opposition led by former military chief Gadi Eisenkot and another 19 for Arab parties. Together, the opposition and Arab factions would hold 68 seats in the 120-seat Knesset, although they remain divided over forming a government together. Netanyahu struck a defiant tone in his first election-night speech at Likud headquarters in Jerusalem, declaring that his party had emerged as the largest in Israel and calling for the formation of a strong right-wing government...

On the day a sitting president landed in their town for the first time in 34 years, people waited for hours in lines that stretched for blocks in this reliably red city. But this crowd on the east side of the city wasn’t waiting for President Donald Trump. They wanted to see Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico. “We’re all closet Democrats,” said Dr. Tim Jones, 66, an emergency room physician, laughing and gesturing to a sea of people around him in line before Talarico’s evening rally. “There are a lot of people who are finally upset at gas prices, diesel prices, inflation, lies, the war, all of it. It’s the corruption, tearing down part of the White House to build this vanity ballroom. I mean, it’s just pathetic. So people finally are deciding, ‘We’ll get out to vote.’”

A federal judge ruled Tuesday that Republican Bill Essayli is not legally serving as the top U.S. prosecutor in Los Angeles. The ruling is the latest roadblock to the Trump administration’s effort to extend handpicked acting U.S. attorneys beyond the 120-day limit set by federal law. The strategy was designed to bypass confirmation by the U.S. Senate — something that generally requires a degree of bipartisan support. Essayli “is unlawfully serving as a ‘de facto’ United States Attorney,” U.S. District Judge J. Michael Seabright wrote...

Two former luxury real estate brokers and their brother were each sentenced to 30 years in federal prison, seven months after they were convicted of drugging and raping women in a sex trafficking ring. Federal prosecutors sought life sentences for Oren and Alon Alexander, a pair of former powerful real estate brokers, and their brother, Tal, in a New York City courtroom Tuesday afternoon. Attorneys for the brothers, who have asserted their innocence, asked the judge to give the men the mandatory minimum, instead. U.S. District Judge Valerie Caproni characterized the brothers as “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.” On one side, they were described as gentlemen who loved their children, she said, and on the other, they were described as “sadistic, misogynistic, sexual predators.”

President Trump joked Tuesday that Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) would be his pick for the next Supreme Court vacancy, saying the senator could get unanimously confirmed because lawmakers in both parties would jump at the chance to get rid of him in Congress. During a midterm rally in Lubbock, Texas, the president praised Cruz as a “brilliant lawyer” before suggesting he had found a way around the often-contentious Supreme Court confirmation process. “I picked three Supreme Court justices, and it’s very hard to get them approved,” Trump said, referring to his appointments of Justices Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett. “I said, ‘Look, I have an answer to it.’ Ted is a brilliant guy, brilliant lawyer, brilliant all that,” he said...
