President Donald Trump said Thursday he is renaming Lake Ontario to be known as “Lake America” in the United States as he escalates his trade war with Canada. The Republican president signed an executive order directing the Interior Department to update the lake’s name in the U.S. geographic naming service. Trump cannot force Canada to follow along, however. Trump has been floating the idea of the name change in recent days as the U.S. announced it was imposing 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods over the weekend after talks between the countries broke down. Something strange has been transpiring in secondhand bookshops around the world. Over the past several months, bookstore owners from Northumberland to Galway to Wellington have received enormous orders from buyers that they have never heard of, for large quantities of books that have nothing in common. The orders are not for a themed collection, and they aren’t from a scholar filling in gaps in a field of study. Instead, they are wild, haphazard lots of titles, the likes of an Estonian translation of a le Carré spy novel, a 1983 issue of a naval magazine, and a manual on eighteenth-century African farm tools. Adding to the strangeness, the buyers hide behind unremarkable aliases and ship their orders to anonymous freight warehouses. And most tellingly, they are just fine paying full retail, never asking for the bulk discount that any real book dealer would expect and demand. As an example of what is happening, a shop in England has quietly moved 6,000 books to these clandestine buyers since January. The U.S. Department of Justice is suing Washington over state laws that allow undocumented immigrants to access in-state tuition and other financial assistance at public universities and colleges. The lawsuit alleges Washington has for over two decades “ignored” federal laws that bar immigrants without legal status from being eligible for state postsecondary education benefits like grants and student loans. Under a landmark state law passed in 2003, undocumented students can receive “resident student” status if they have a high school diploma or equivalent, live in Washington for at least a year, and file an affidavit declaring they either have already or will apply for permanent residency.
