President Donald Trump said Sunday that the Fourth of July celebration on the National Mall was "an even more spectacular evening" than had been expected after a weather-related evacuation forced spectators to leave the area.  "The Crowd at 7:05 in the evening was 422,000 people!" Trump wrote on Truth Social. "All were forced to leave because of the weather, the event was canceled, and everyone was gone because of lightning. When I heard that it was canceled, I immediately overturned that decision and waited a while for people to come back." The event, part of the "Salute to America" celebration, had been evacuated Saturday evening after a severe thunderstorm warning prompted officials to clear the National Mall. Trump said he reversed the decision to cancel the program and waited for the crowd to reassemble...

House Speaker Mike Johnson said he plans to move quickly to advance President Donald Trump’s signature voter ID legislation through the arduous budget reconciliation process once the House returns to Washington, downplaying the heightened tensions within the GOP after he sent lawmakers home early for the holidays after a few Republicans brought the floor to a halt. “I just decided it was best to send everybody home to go celebrate July Fourth in their districts. We’ll come back, gather everybody together,” he told Fox News on Sunday. “The big urgency is to get SAVE America passed. The president has that as a top priority, and so do I.”

President Trump lost a bid this weekend to put off paying E. Jean Carroll. A federal judge in Manhattan on Saturday turned down a request from the president's lawyers for extra time to respond to Carroll's attempt to collect roughly $5.8 million from the 2023 civil case, in which a jury found Trump liable for sexually abusing her and defaming her by dismissing her account as a "con job." The Supreme Court declined to review that verdict on June 29; Carroll moved the next day to have the money, plus interest, ordered to her, while accusing Trump of dragging his feet, USA Today reports...

Paul Pelosi, the husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, is suspected of crashing into a parked car and driving away from the scene Friday afternoon in Northern California, the Napa County Sheriff's Office said. Pelosi allegedly struck a vehicle on the 6700 block of Yount Street in Yountville, around 2:30 p.m. local time, the sheriff's office said. The vehicle, which was unoccupied, was legally parked on the side of the roadway and was left with major rear damage, according to the sheriff's office. Yountville is located about 50 miles north of San Francisco...
