#1 Trump Ramps up Education Department’s Dismantling With Changes on Special Education and Civil Rights - Annie Ma for AP, The Associated Press (community note), FOX 5 Atlanta, POLITICO, Reuters, and The New Republic on X
President Donald Trump’s administration on Tuesday accelerated its dismantling of the Education Department, delegating much of its work to protect the nation’s at-risk students. The Department of Justice will take on enforcement of civil rights in education, while the Department of Health and Human Services will oversee special education, administration officials announced. With those moves, the Education Department has now carved away the vast majority of its functions for other agencies to handle... Republican Rep. Mike Collins on Tuesday defeated Derek Dooley and will face off against Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-Ga.) in November. President Trump endorsed Collins after the May 19 primary. He now faces a well-funded Democratic incumbent who's won a statewide campaign in Georgia before. Republicans view the Georgia Democrat's seat as key to maintaining control of the U.S. Senate. Collins won roughly 55% of the vote, according to preliminary results from Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger's office. The AP called the race for Collins just after 8:30 pm with 52% of the vote counted. Dooley later conceded to Collins, the AP reported. "He ran a tough campaign, he got out early, and we just never could catch him." The runoff became one of the clearest tests yet of the competing arguments shaping the Republican Party in Georgia and nationally: embrace MAGA or pursue an alternative path to victory... Lt. Gov. Burt Jones (R), backed by both President Trump and Gov. Brian Kemp (R), is projected to lose the Republican runoff for Georgia governor to healthcare executive and billionaire Rick Jackson, according to Decision Desk HQ. Jones’s loss deals a major blow to the president, adding another statewide loss to his primary scorecard. Jackson will now face Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms (D) in the general election, which the nonpartisan election handicapper Cook Political Report considers a “toss-up.” Floyd "Money" Mayweather built a fortune around his famous nickname. Now, he may have some explaining to do. The undefeated boxing icon is facing serious prison time after allegedly writing a bad check for a luxury timepiece in Las Vegas. Clark County prosecutors slapped the 49-year-old fighter with two serious felony charges, including theft of property valued over $100,000 and passing a check with intent to defraud. Authorities say Mayweather's alleged theft stems from a shopping trip on New Year’s Eve in 2024 when he set his sights on a rare Audemars Piguet watch... Gov. Gavin Newsom — just a day after announcing he’s under federal investigation — has agreed to pay a $31,500 ethics fine after California’s political watchdogs found the governor failed to timely disclose millions of dollars in donations he solicited, many of which were tied to Los Angeles wildfire relief. The Fair Political Practices Commission’s enforcement division said Newsom failed to file 36 behested payment reports on time in 2024 and 2025, covering more than $5.5 million in payments from corporations, foundations, and other donors... President Donald Trump announced "major combat operations" against Iran on Feb. 28, with massive joint U.S.-Israeli strikes targeting military, government, and infrastructure sites. Following the announcement of a two-week ceasefire, initial U.S.-Iran talks in Pakistan in April failed to reach a peace deal. Trump later announced the open-ended extension of the ceasefire and the continuation of a U.S. blockade until negotiations concluded. On Sunday, Trump announced that the U.S. and Iran had reached a "great deal," which he said would be signed on Friday... President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he was delaying Jay Clayton’s nomination to lead the U.S. intelligence community, citing his frustration over a lapsed surveillance tool and a voter ID bill that currently lacks enough support for passage. In a lengthy overnight post to Truth Social, Trump said that he was canceling a confirmation hearing for Clayton to be his director of national intelligence, which was planned for Wednesday. He issued the post while keeping world leaders waiting for nearly an hour on the final day of the Group of Seven summit in Evian-les-Bains, France.
