President Donald Trump announced he plans to sign an executive order on Monday that will reduce the cost of prescription drugs and pharmaceuticals "almost immediately, by 30% to 80%." Trump made the announcement on Truth Social Sunday. "For many years the World has wondered why Prescription Drugs and Pharmaceuticals in the United States States of America were SO MUCH HIGHER IN PRICE THAN THEY WERE IN ANY OTHER NATION, SOMETIMES BEING FIVE TO TEN TIMES MORE EXPENSIVE THAN THE SAME DRUG, MANUFACTURED IN THE EXACT SAME LABORATORY OR PLANT, BY THE SAME COMPANY???" Trump wrote. "It was always difficult to explain and very embarrassing because, in fact, there was no correct or rightful answer...
#9 Pharmaceutical Stocks Tumble on Trump Plan to Cut US Drug Prices - Bloomberg, Puru, Finance Guy, Charlie Knot, OmIAm, and Bruce Kamich, CMT on X
Shares of pharmaceutical companies fell across the world after US President Donald Trump said he planned to order a cut in US prescription drug costs to bring them in line with other countries, prompting concern that profits will take a hit. European drugmakers, including Novo Nordisk A/S, AstraZeneca Plc, and Roche Holding AG, slid, missing out on a broader rally, while in Asia, the pharmaceuticals subgroup in Japan’s Topix Index posted its biggest one-day loss since August. Shares in US drugmakers were also weaker, with Eli Lilly & Co., Pfizer Inc., Bristol-Myers Squibb Co., and Merck & Co. Inc. all down in premarket trading in New York...#8 Global Stocks Rise After US and China Agree to Slash Tariffs for 90 Days - Hugh Cameron for Newsweek, David Agar, Mohamed A. El-Erian, AIMasters, and CNBC International on X
U.S futures and global indexes are rising on the back of a significant de-escalation in the trade dispute with China. Speaking from Switzerland on Monday morning, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that China and the U.S. had agreed to a 90-day pause on their reciprocal tariffs, "and substantially moved down the tariff levels." Bessent said that both countries had agreed to cut their tariffs on the other's imports by "115 percent." German economist Thiemo Fetzer described the agreement as "temporary win/win" for both economies, but told Newsweek that whether it marks a turning point for the relationship or simply a break in the tensions "remains to be seen." Concerns over a flesh-eating parasite have led U.S. officials to halt all imports of live cattle, horses, and bison across the Southern border. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins made the decision on Sunday, citing the northward spread of the New World screwworm, which has been detected in southern Mexico in the last year. "The protection of our animals and safety of our nation's food supply is a national security issue of the utmost importance," Rollins said in a statement. "This is not about politics or punishment of Mexico, rather it is about food and animal safety," she said... Donald Trump's administration is "actively looking at" suspending habeas corpus - the right of a person to challenge their detention in court - one of the US president's top aides has said. Stephen Miller, the White House deputy chief of staff, told reporters on Friday that the US Constitution allowed for the legal liberty to be suspended in times of "rebellion or invasion". His comments come as judges have sought to challenge some recent detentions made by the Trump administration in an effort to combat illegal immigration, as well as remove dissenting foreign students. "A lot of it depends on whether the courts do the right thing or not," Miller said... President Trump attacked Democratic lawmakers for criticizing his upcoming receipt of a luxury Boeing jet from Qatar. In a Sunday night post on Truth Social, the president dismissed critics of a reported plan for Trump to receive a Boeing 747-8 airplane from the government of Qatar. The plane would replace Air Force One, according to several media reports, and would be kept by Trump’s eventual presidential library after the end of his term... President Donald Trump revealed that Edan Alexander, 21, who is believed to be the last living American hostage held by Hamas, was released and “coming home to his family.” In a post on Truth Social, Trump expressed gratefulness “to all those involved” in making Alexander’s release happen. Trump added that Alexander’s release by Hamas terrorists was “a step taken in good faith towards the United States and the efforts of the mediators” in order to end the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas. “I am happy to announce that Edan Alexander, an American citizen who has been held hostage since October 2023, is coming home to his family,” Trump said. “I am grateful to all those involved in making this monumental news happen. This was a step taken in good faith towards the United States and the efforts of the mediators — Qatar and Egypt — to put an end to this very brutal war and return ALL living hostages and remains to their loved ones.” Over the past 48 hours, Vice President Vance and I have engaged with senior Indian and Pakistani officials, including Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif, External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir, and National Security Advisors Ajit Doval and Asim Malik. I am pleased to announce that the Governments of India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire and to start talks on a broad set of issues at a neutral site. We commend Prime Ministers Modi and Sharif on their wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship in choosing the path of peace... Not content with the current scale of harassment being unleashed on immigrants in the United States, President Donald Trump has ordered the Department of Homeland Security to increase the number of officers focused on deportation by a whopping 20,000. The order was included in a presidential proclamation aimed at pushing undocumented immigrants to leave the country voluntarily, with Trump taking the opportunity to call on DHS to begin “deputizing and contracting with state and local law enforcement officers, former federal officers, officers and personnel within other federal agencies, and other individuals.” President Donald Trump's top budget official is reportedly set to take over operations at the Department of Government Efficiency once Elon Musk steps aside. Russell Vought, the director of the White House Office of Management and Budget, will soon take on much of DOGE's workload, including working with Congress to recoup funds, reclassifying federal workers and advancing his proposed 2025 budget - which would greatly slash government funding, the Wall Street Journal reports. He has already served as Musk's lower-profile partner, and has celebrated his own department's efforts to slash government regulations - noting that President Trump had vowed to cut 10 government regulations for every one that is added...
